“To think you can love God without being changed by Him, is to think you can jump into the ocean and not get wet. To really really love Him, you must understand that your life is going to be wrecked by Him, and built again into something beautiful, something lasting”
I found that the way God can really reach us, to get us to the place we need to be, is to destroy and break down the walls we’ve built in our life. Maybe unintentional walls. Maybe walls we don’t realize are there, keeping us from having a breakthrough in our lives. Or possibly walls we’ve created to keep us protected from things but we left God on the outside with no way in. God will break those strongholds and get us to the place where we’re no longer safe, or comfortable. A place where we’re desperate for someone or something to satisfy the longing and fill the void. We must turn to God in times such as this. Let Him make you broken. Then let Him rebuild you. Sometimes God will allow pain, disappointment, heartbreak, tragedy…so we’ll turn to Him. I pray I will never turn my face or look any direction but to God in those times in my life. Because He is wanting to heal. He is wanting to love. In my deepest sorrow I saw His glory, and it astounded me. His arms of comfort kept me. His mercy humbled me. Because He saw the depths of my heart and still reached for me. He still called me. God, until you are my one desire, my breath and my everything, make me broken.
When we are broken, it gives us new light and perspective on God’s will and plan for our life – brokeness reminds us who is at the center of it all.
It is not our will, but His.
However, we don’t always have that mindset. We tend to think we know exactly how our lives should play out. It takes God removing the remote control from our hands. That process isn’t always fun. In fact, it usually looks a lot like pain and hurting.
However, we can embrace those moments of utter dependency on Jesus. Because there is something so beautiful about Him filling us up in our times of incompleteness. God uses our broken hearts to draw us into His loving arms.
When we are whole, we are unmovable and stiff. Brokenness makes a way for God to reform us according to His perfect will for our lives. It results in a moving in such a way that I am changed by Him, not by my efforts.
He will use our brokeness. It’s where He meets us – in that dark place. It’s where he speaks with us and impresses things upon our hearts. These are defining moments. It’s a way our character is built, It brings us closer to Him and it drives us to a stronger prayer life (if we allow it to positively effect us). With a stronger prayer life we can begin to pray for others with the same fire we prayed for our own needs. Because we understand the suffering – we understand the need.
“Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will declare what He has done for my soul.” Psalm 66:16
No one gleans strength from a testimony of someone who says “I’ve never gone through any trials.” We can, however, draw from the well of someone who has experienced and been in such places before. Their well will be full of wisdom and understanding, forbearance and patience as they had to work through their brokenness through prayer and waiting on the Lord. Ask anyone who has a testimony – the shaping of their lives came from trials and struggles.
"In my distress I cried unto the Lord, and he heard me." Psalm 120:150
